About Mvumi
-
Mvumi Mission is part of the Dodoma Rural District, situated close to the equator in central Tanzania. The village is about 40km to the South East of Dodoma, accessed via a single dirt road.
-
While strikingly beautiful, the hilly area is semi-desert and badly de-forested, known for low agricultural production. The majority of households are engaged in small- scale, subsistence farming, relying on traditional methods and equipment.
-
The population of Mvumi Village is approximately 4,000. Poverty levels are high and many live a near cashless life, eating what they can grow, and selling any surplus in the market. Village life is communal but can be cruel for people who are sick, old, uneducated, abandoned or orphaned.
-
While HIV remains a threat, access to antiviral drugs is increasing. Malaria remains widespread in the region and is most prevalent during the peak period of agricultural activity and labour operation, thus undermining the agricultural productivity and income generation.
-
Traditional rural houses are low, mud brick with thatched roofs, and no protection against insects. Most women and girls live in a far more challenging and physically demanding routine of water collection, maize pounding, and other domestic chores.
-
Education offers a vital pathway of opportunity out of poverty, but many Tanzanians are unable to attend secondary education primarily due to inadequate primary education, or as a result of family duties. The state requires that all secondary education and examinations are in English, which for most students is their third language, after Kiswahili and the local tribal language of Wagogo.
